But plenty of progress was made in 2008, and the World Wildlife Fund is reminding us of the many conservation victories in 2008:

Sumatran Elephant and Tiger Habitat Protected -- In August, Indonesia committed to doubling Tesso Nilo National Park, home to endangered Sumatran elephants and critically endangered Sumatran tigers

Clean Energy Tax Incentives Extended -- Thanks to action by Congress in October, these incentives did not expire, and will support renewable energy projects.

Illegal Logging Ban Enacted -- The US led the way with this important legislation, becoming the first country to ban the import and sale of illegally sourced wood and wood products. This helps endangered species, like orangutans, by preserving their habitats.

New Funding Approved for Conservation on Farm and Ranch Lands -- This $300 billion bill was a mixed blessing, providing $4 billion in new funding to support conservation efforts, which was good. Unfortunately proposed grassland protections were significantly weakened in the final version.

House Passes Great Cats and Rare Canids Act -- After several years of support from WWF members, in 2008 this Act made great progress by finally passing in the House of Representatives, as well as the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. The Act will protects lions, leopards, jaguars, cheetahs, Ethiopian wolves and African wild dogs.

The Worlds Switches Their Lights Off for "Earth Hour 2008" -- 36 million Americans, and 50 million people around the world, turned off their lights for one hour on March 29, 2008.

House Passes Tropical Forest and Coral Conservation Act - A bill to provide funding to protect tropical forests and coral reefs through "debt-for-nature swaps" passed the U.S. House of Representatives.

Tennessee Streams Safe From Pollution -- WWF and local activists defeated legislation that would have undermined the Clean Water Act and allowed widespread pollution of Tennessee streams.

If that's not enough to lift your spirits, you can go back and read about all of the progress the WWF has made since 1998. It is a long list, and will remind you that every little bit of conservation effort adds up to great things!
World Wildlife Fund Victories in 2008 originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 16:01:00 EST 0. Japan, for instance, has 14% of its citizens using bicycles to get around. The Netherlands have a whopping 27% hopping on bikes.

The Koreans have a distance to go. Only 1.2% are currently using bicycles. Their aim is to see this rate rise to 10% by 2017 and replace 5% of road congestion.

And how could they do this? One idea would be almost 2000 miles of bike path that would cross the country. This could unite different cities in a very eco-friendly way. The bike-only path, which could be built over the next 10 years, could also host an bicycle competition similar to the Tour de France. Other ideas include a Bicycle Day and getting bicycle-friendly traffic rules to the cities.

Anything that separates bicycles from cars is hugely appealing to bicyclists in urban settings. If ideas like this are implemented in my city, I may consider taking my bike out for the first time since I got doored and thrown to the pavement.
Korea to go Bicycle Crazy originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 15:30:00 EST 0. They are pure glass with silicone stoppers. I have to say they are pretty cool looking. However, you would definitely want to be careful with them as you are transporting them, as they are not going to be able to take the real rough-and-tough stress that a disposable plastic or even many reusable bottles can take.

The one thing I am not quite sure about is the fact that they are made to "mimic plastic disposables." Now, I get it that there is probably an ergonomically-friendly design for water bottles, which allows for easy handling, but I'm not sure that mimicking the look of a plastic disposable is necessarily a look that is attractive. Although I did think this "I am not a paper cup" had a sense of humor.

The bottles are available from Crate & Barrel for $7.95 to $15.95 and require hand washing.

I like watching Carlin because his comedy keeps me grounded and allows me to laugh at myself. This brief clip addresses people who go around worrying about endangered species when many species become extinct completely unrelated to human encroachment. "Let them go gracefully," Carlin says.

Though there is plenty to disagree with in the clip, I don't think that Carlin was looking for a debate ... in fact I'm certain of it. Perhaps environmentalists are self-important like he says. However, if I didn't spend my time trying to figure out a good argument to convince my husband to allow a chicken coop in the backyard, I'd have to find something else to fill my time like heavy drinking or Valium.
George Carlin on Saving the Planet originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:37:00 EST 0. That's no secret. He and Charlie Engle co-founded the H2O Africa Project to help communities in Africa gain access to clean drinking water.
It is their charity that is featured throughout the documentary Running the Sahara which Damon produced and narrated. The film follows Engle and two other men as they become the first to run across the Sahara. That's over 4,300 miles which they completed (or did they?) in 111 days. According to ecorazzi that's the equivalent of 170 marathons in a row (my math isn't so good).

That's pretty amazing. I wouldn't have lasted 111 minutes (which I could track on my Limited Edition Running The Sahara Chronograph).

[via ecorazzi]
Matt Damon and the Sahara Run originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:04:00 EST 0. If you have to wear them, then why not have them do the earth some good at the same time?

Enter the solar charging bra or an over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder that harnesses the energy of the 'bounce'. Creative, right? There are other things your skivvies can do to help the planet -- like buying fair trade, organic underoos at GreenKnickers. Or, you can make a 'safe statement' with these prophalactic inspired fashion items.

And as if all this weren't enough, although no eco-friendly lingerie is required, it's certainly a good idea to make green choices in the bedroom by losing the light bulbs in favor of candles and choosing bamboo sheets to get between.

[via our fabu sister site Lemondrop]

Eco-Undies - Sexy and Green, What's Not to Love? originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 13:47:00 EST 0. It was a lot of money at the time but I figured that it would save money in the long run (and the landfill). I also was counting on making back some of that money by selling them used via eBay.

When I bought the diapers, the used market was doing well, paying as much as 2/3 the original price. It came as a surprise to me the other day when I found out that eBay is not longer accepting used cloth diapers or covers for hygienic reasons. Their policy on used clothing reads, "(u)sed underwear including, but not limited to, boxer shorts, panties, briefs, athletic supporters and cloth diapers (including diaper covers) are not permitted."

So what's a mom to do with 55 painstakingly well cared for, used cloth diapers? GACK!

Fortunately there are some sites that have sprung up to pick up the slack.

The auction site, myuseddiapers.com features in eBay-like setting to sell used diapers. However, there are few registered users (1755) which means fewer eyes looking at the posts.

Diaper Swappers has more registered users (nearly 55,000) but it's convoluted and requires participation on discussion boards. Who has time for that?

Attachment parenting website, AmityMama, has forums where people post used cloth diapers for sale.

The Diaper Jungle has a thriving cloth diaper community that allows you to post diapers for sale.

Finally, there is craigslist but that limits you to your general area.

As for me, I am still mad at eBay. I'm sure I'll be posting on a forum somewhere soon.
eBay Refuses Used Cloth Diapers originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 12:53:00 EST 0. Known as the king of 'Blobitecture', Greg Lynn's creations of twisted, melted and tweaked toys become colorful, unique works of art. His vision was to recycle children's toys into furniture, building elements and objects of use and he is certainly accomplishing that with flair and style. Plus, he'll take your unwanted ride-ons and send you the packaging and postage. Check out the gallery below to view his recycled wonders.

Gallery: Toy Art

Toys Become Art in Greg Lynn's Hands originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 12:33:00 EST 0. It's a great place to find free maternity and baby stuff.

You can score gear from other parents, or post things you no longer need and be sure they are moving on to a good home. There is a membership fee - normally $4.95 for a lifetime membership - but it's only $1during the month of January.

This would be a great way to get the things you need, meet other local parents and even set up ongoing hand-me-down relationships with people. And for $1, you can't beat the price. It's frugal and green, my favorite combination.
Freepeats For Used Baby Gear originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 12:03:00 EST 0. Luckily, the fact that he's a die hard motorhead is offset by the fact that his love of gadgetry and machines extends to renewable energy equipment, as well as choppers and sports cars. Still, as you can see from this video, he hasn't toned down his sense of machismo one-upmanship.

While discussing the ins and outs of the very cool magnetic-levitating type of wind turbine which he will be installing on his 17,000 square-foot garage, he is informed that this smaller version belongs to Ed Begely -- and Leno apparently loves the fact that his is much bigger. When it comes to turbines, experts agree that size matters. Ed Begely's 1.5KW turbine stands at about 3.5ft, while Leno's 5KW is about 8ft tall. While a little healthy competition is usually a good thing, poor Begley is getting it from all sides. First, it was Bill Nye ... now Leno.

[via BoingBoing]
Jay Leno's Turbine is Bigger Than Ed Begley's - Size Matters originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 11:30:00 EST 0. Not only does it provide inexpensive, flexible and lightweight panels but using loofahs, combined with recycled plastic and other agricultural products, reduces waste and provides income too. In such a heavily deforested part of the world this solution is bringing decent housing to thousands without the environmental worries. It is innovation at its best.

Gallery: Sustainable Housing in Paraguay

Loofahs Make Sustainable Building Materials originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 10:33:00 EST 0. Last year's CES saw the introduction of a new "green" awareness for the consumer electronics convention, showcasing more energy-efficient and off-grid gadgets for the environmentally aware. This year, they're taking it a few steps further.

The newly-dubbed Greener Gadgets Tech Zone area of the Las Vegas convention has grown from a 520 square feet section to more than 3,000 square feet this year. This is in addition to a new program where they aim to reduce the creation of carbon emissions, rather than simply purchase carbon offset points as they did last year. Big-name consumer electronics manufacturers like Toshiba, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and HP are all expected to announce exciting environmental news this year, from now through Sunday. Check out the CES main website for more details.
CES has Gone Greener for 2009 originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 10:03:00 EST 0. As far as I know, the Renew W233 is the leader of the pack. With a pretty <strike>boring</strike> standard set of features, it's not the awesome capabilities of this phone that are supposed to blow your hair back. Instead, it's the extremely light footprint of the Renew that's truly impressive.

For starters, the plastic housing is made from 100% recycled water bottles and is, of course 100% recyclable itself. Second, all energy used to produce the phone has been offset through a partnership with Carbonfund.org, aimed at renewable energy and reforestation. As far as packaging goes, the Renew comes in a recycled cardboard box, printed on with eco-friendly soy-based ink. Moto also promises a talk time of 9 hours, cutting down your phone's lifecycle energy consumption.

Gallery: Motorola's Carbon Neutral Phone

The Renew is slated to hit stores early this year.

[via Inhabitat]
Motorola Launches the Planet's First Carbon Neutral Phone originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST 0. Between 'Buying in Bulk' and 'Planting a Vegetable Garden' your grocery bill and consumption habits should be a little more earth-friendly. Then 'Make Your Own Art Supplies' like glue and finger paint from household items. I saved the best for last...'Organize a Toy Exchange' and a 'Magazine Coop' both of which bring new entertainment without the extra waste and cost. Brilliant! Check out their five other suggestions and kick off 2009 with an eco- and cheapo-bang!

Family 'Greening' Just Got Easier originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 08:38:00 EST 0. I'm not going to say anyone is making the wrong choice if they are actually working out but, let's look at some ways you can make greener workout choices.

Go outside! Ok, I know, many of you are dealing with snow. If you can, go outside and walk or job, hike a trail, go snowshoeing, do something. Even shoveling snow will burn some calories. While you're out there, enjoy the nature around you and take a moment to pick up any trash you might see.

If you can't go outside, use some of the workout DVDs you already have or pick some up used as the people who have already gotten in shape tackle their clutter and sell them off.

If you must purchase a treadmill or other exercise machine, buy it used and do your research to find something that is energy efficient.

Look for more natural fabrics in your workout wear, or fleece and other fabrics made from recycled plastics.

If you need to join a gym because of space and weather limitations, think about only joining for the winter months and make sure to be eco-friendly while you are there. Use only one (or no) towels, bring your reusable water bottle and encourage others to do the same.

Create power from your workout with tools like the Pedal-A-Watt.

We just installed a woodstove at our house so I'm guessing my winter workouts will be coming from lots of wood chopping, splitting, stacking and hauling.
Eco-Friendly Workout Tips originally appeared on Green Daily on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 07:58:00 EST 0. Also, that celebrities, being less smart than regular people, are all the more susceptible to this appeal.

In November Misha Barton was photographed frolicking with a dolphin at the opening of the Aquaventure water park in Dubai. Because of course you can swim with dolphins in Dubai. What else would a civilized rich traveler do after skiing the desert, and before the unicorn hunt? Go for a quick dip with Flipper!

And while you might think there is something sort of environmentally off about putting dolphins in captivity for the enjoyment of celebrities and other well-to-do tourists, noted "Green Actor" and Entourage star Adrian Grenier spent New Year's Eve "in the tank" at Sea World in Australia.

What do you think? If you or your children are gamers, you may already be familiar with Fable 2 from Microsoft's Lionhead Studios. The game is set in an open-ended, consequence-based fantasy universe and is available only on the Xbox 360. According to PETA, it is also a vegetarian's dream come true.

In their 2008 year-end awards, PETA awarded Fable 2 their prestigious Game of the Year honors, citing pro-vegetarian themes that teach gamers the real-life benefit of a vegetarian diet. Apparently, in the game your character can eat a plant-based diet to rack up "purity points", whereas eating meat will make your character fat and evil. PETA is certainly no stranger to gaming as they've recently caused a stir with their Cooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals Flash game, poking fun at the Nintendo game Cooking Mama which uses predominantly meat-based recipes.
PETA Names Veggie-friendly Fable 2 as the Game of the Year originally appeared on Green Daily on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 18:02:00 EST 0. Unfortunately, there's been a actual human casualty in this year's expedition as well. The crew of the Kyoshin Maru #2 is accusing the Sea Shepherds of disrupting search efforts as the Japanese attempted to locate a crew member washed overboard.
According to the whalers' story: engine room oiler Hajime Shirasaki was reported missing early Monday. During rescue efforts, whalers claim that the Sea Shepherds vessel took advantage of distress signals to approach the ship with their lights off -- with the goal of ostensibly disrupting whatever the whalers were up to. It just so happened that they were trying to rescue a crew member, who is now believed to have drowned.

As the Sea Shepherds tell it, they approach the vessel with their lights on, offering to assist the whalers with their search. According to Captain Paul Watson, the Japanese replied "that they did not want any assistance from an eco-terrorist organization."

What really went on -- aside from the tragic death of a sailor? Just like with the magic bullet in last year's expedition, I guess we'll probably never know. Although I thought that there might be a TV crew filming the whole thing for Animal Planet. With the news about all of the pirates, and now this. It seems that the high seas are the new wild west.
First Casualty of the Whale Wars? originally appeared on Green Daily on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 17:00:00 EST 0. Either way, you need to keep an eye on the power button. Video game systems use as much power annually as the city of San Diego. Yikes!

As shocking as that is, it's old news here on Green Daily. What we haven't told you, is how to fix the problem at your house. Some tips, from Planet Green:

If you don't have a gaming console yet, go for the Nintendo Wii. It uses around 1/10 of the energy as the other guys.

If you have an Xbox 360, you can set it to use a power save mode.

Like many appliances, turn it off when you aren't using it.

If your system can play movies, using it for that purpose probably uses more energy than just using the DVD or Blu-Ray player.

Always recycle used systems properly. They contain toxic chemicals and should definitely not be thrown in the trash.
